Adalaj Vav is a special stepwell that is five stories high and shaped like an eight sides It is a beautiful building supported by 16 pillars. Because sunlight only shines inside for a short time each day, the inside of the well stays about 6 degrees cooler than outside, making it a great place to cool off in the summer.

The walls and pillars of Adalaj Vav have carvings of many gods and goddesses. Every morning, local people come here to pray. They believe that the statues of the nine planets on the walls help protect them.

History of Adalaj stepwell

The Adalaj stepwell is an important part of Ahmedabad’s history. It was built in 1498 by Rani Rudabai, the wife of Rana Veer Singh from the Vaghela family. He ruled a small kingdom called Dandai Desh.

A long time ago, the kingdom had a big problem with water. There wasn’t enough for everyone. So, King Rana Veer Singh decided to build a huge stepwell to help. He started building it, but sadly, he was killed in a fight with Sultan Mahmud Begada of Gujarat.

After the king died, Sultan Mahmud Begada wanted to marry Rani Rudabai. She agreed to finish building the stepwell first. When it was done, she invited some holy men to bathe in it, making the well holy. Then, something very sad happened – Rani Rudabai fell into the well.

Architecture of Adalaj stepwell

This amazing stepwell is five stories high and has carvings of gods on its walls. People believe that farmers come here to pray to these gods. There is also a temple at the entrance of the stepwell.

This stepwell has eight sides and many pillars. Each floor has lots of space for people to meet. It was dug very deep to hold a lot of water, so people would have enough even when there is no rain.

How to reach Adalaj stepwell

The distance from Gandhinagar to Adalaj stepwell is approximately 7 kilometers. And from Ahmedabad, it’s about 22 kilometers. So, if you’re traveling from Gandhinagar, it’s a short trip to reach the stepwell. And if you’re coming from Ahmedabad, it’s a bit farther but still not too far away.

If you’re planning to visit, you have different ways to get there. You can take a train, a bus, or even fly to Ahmedabad. From there, it’s a short journey to the stepwell. Once you arrive, you can catch a local taxi, cab, or bus to reach the stepwell easily.

Adalaj Step Well Entry Fee and Timings

You can visit Adalaj Ni Vav anytime from 8 am to 6 pm, and entry free is a 25 rupees fee to explore this stepwell.
