The Girnar Ropeway was first planned in 1983 by the Tourism Corporation of Gujarat Limited (TCGL). However, it took a long time to start because of government approvals and legal issues. Building finally began in September 2018.
Since the ropeway is in the Girnar Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park, special permissions were needed. The National Board for Wildlife gave permission in 2011, and environmental approval was given in 2016.
