You must have heard about Mussoorie at some point or the other. It is a hill town of Uttarakhand, famous as the Queen of Hills. It is situated at an altitude of 2005 m above sea level. Mussoorie offers spectacular views of the vast snow ranges in the north-east and the Doon Valley and Shivalik ranges in the south.

It is located at a distance of 40 km from Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand, it is a very beautiful and romantic place, and is no less than a paradise for nature lovers, Mussoorie Hill Station has always been a favorite place of the people. Once you go, you come here again and again, once you come here the valleys touch your heart.

Discovery and history of Mussoorie

Mussoorie was discovered in 1827 by British military officer Captain Young. He had reached here with some of his friends for mountain climbing. After reaching here, he saw beautiful views of the Doon valleys. He liked the pleasant weather here very much and found this place to be the best place to spend summer holidays.

After that, they started coming here often in summer. He found that there were a lot of lentil plants here, hence he named this place Mussoorie. Till that time Mussoorie was a deserted mountain. And in 1828 the British built their first building in Landhor. In 1829, Lawrence opened his first shop in Landhor Bazaar.

By 1890, when the railway line was built from Haridwar, the crowd of people in Mussoorie also started increasing, and by 1901, the population of Mussoorie increased to about 4500. In which about 80 percent were English. With the construction of a paved road to Mussoorie from 1926 to 1931, the crowd of people coming here started increasing.

Place to visit in Mussoorie

1. Mall Road Mussoorie

Mall Road is the main shopping center in Mussoorie. From where tourists can purchase all types of goods. Along with shops, some hotels are also present in Mussoorie on Mall Road. Mall Road is known as Shopping Street in Mussoorie.

2. Jawala Devi Temple Mussoorie

This temple is situated at an altitude of about 2100 meters above sea level.  This temple is the religious center of Mussoorie. This temple is dedicated to the goddess Durga Mata of Hindu religion. The stone idol of Durga Mata is kept here. Apart from visiting here, devotees can enjoy the attractive views of Yamuna Valley on one side and Shivalik mountain range on the other. This temple is situated at a distance of 9 km from Mussoorie.

3. Happy valley Mussoorie

The valley is located west of Library Point and at the end of Cloud End. This valley is notable for its natural beauty. Apart from this, there are tourist places like Lal Bahadur Shastri Administrative (IAS) Academy and Municipal Garden and Tibetan Temple.

This church was established by the British in 1868. This church is considered to be the oldest church located in the Himalayan belt. A cedar tree worth seeing here was planted by the Princess of Wales in 1906 AD. This church is built in Kauthic architectural style. Whose inner part is quite beautiful.

5. Dhanolti, mussoorie

Situated at an altitude of about 2300 meters above sea level, this place is a very beautiful picnic spot. This place, famous for its calm and clean environment, is situated on the Chamba-Mussoorie road. Which is situated at a distance of about 25 km from Mussoorie. From here you can enjoy the beautiful views of Doon Valley. Apart from this, there is also an Eco Park surrounded by cedar forests worth seeing here.

6. Mussoorie Lekh

This place is a beautiful picnic spot located in Mussoorie. Which has recently been developed by Mussoorie City Board. Tourists can enjoy boating here. Also, a picturesque view of the Doon Valley and the beautiful surrounding hill villages is visible from here. This lake is situated on Mussoorie Dehradun Road.

7. Camels Back Road

As the name suggests, it is Camel’s Back Road. This road is shaped like a camel. Which is completely made of stone. It is three km long from Kulri Bazaar to Library Chowk. While passing through this road, one can see amazing views of the valley and beautiful views of the mountains. This place is famous for its natural beauty. This is the reason why this place is considered ideal for photos and selfies.

8. Gun hill,mussoorie

Situated at an altitude of 2100 meters above sea level, this place is a famous tourist destination of Mussoorie. Which is one of the highest points of Mussoorie after Lal Tibba. It is said that there was indiscriminate firing here during the British era. This is why this place is known as Gun Hill. Presently the reservoir of Mussoorie is situated on this hill. There is also a mall here, which is a famous shopping center of Mussoorie.

9. George Everest view point Mussoorie

The road to reach here is very bad, you will need an SUV car or two wheeler to reach here. If you take a small car here then you will definitely face problems in returning your car from there. But that place is so beautiful that after reaching here and seeing the view, your heart will be very happy. This is the highest hill around Mussoorie, that is why the view of sunrise and sunset from here will thrill you. You must go here once. People can also enjoy trekking here.

10. Kempty falls, mussoorie

Kempty falls This is a beautiful waterfall situated at a height of about 1700 meters above sea level. Which is one of the major places of Mussoorie. It falls here from a height of about 40 feet. It was developed as a tourist destination by British officer John Macnon around 1835. And here British officers used to have tea parties. Campti is made up of two words Camp and Tee. That is why this place was named Camp T i.e. Campty. Today lakhs of tourists come here throughout the year.

The weather in Mussoorie remains cool throughout the year. The maximum temperature here can be up to 25 and the minimum temperature can be up to -5. Due to the cool weather throughout the year, a large number of tourists come here in summer.

How to reach Mussoorie

To reach Mussoorie you can come by air, rail and road. The nearest airport is Jolly Grant, Dehradun, which is located at a distance of 60 km from here, from Jolly Grant you can reach Mussoorie by taxi. The nearest railway station, Dehradun, is 35 km away from where one can reach Mussoorie by taxi or bus. Mussoorie is well connected by road and there are very good roads here. You can reach here by your personal car, bus or taxi.
